Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Fesitval:Year 12
For over a decade people have been coming from near and far to participate in what could be one of the most unique events of its kind – the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. There is nothing out of the ordinary about any of the events that make up Pacific Crest – it’s the variety that is offered, that makes this event stand out.
Participants are greeted by live music and a race expo upon arrival in Sunriver, OR, the site of the Pacific Crest events. The first event of the weekend is the Kid’s Splash, Pedal-n-Dash, which has become a real crowd pleaser and is definitely a hit with pint-sized participants. Saturday starts off with a half marathon and marathon around the perimeter of the Sunriver community, and is followed by a half iron triathlon (1.2mi swim, 58mi bike, 13.1mi run) and endurance duathlon (58mi bike, 13.1mi run) that starts at Wickiup Reservoir in the Deschutes National Forest. Sunday is also packed with action, including a 5k and 10k run/walk, and two separate kid’s events. An Olympic-distance triathlon (1.5k swim, 28mi bike, 10k run) and duathlon (28mi bike, 10k run) are also slated for Sunday.
The half Iron triathlon is typically hailed as the “main event,” as it draws the most competitive and most geographically diverse field of any of the Pacific Crest events. A $5,000 prize purse adds some tough competition into the mix for the half iron event, with $1,000 on the line for both the top male and female.
Pacific Crest has become one of the most popular multi-sport events in the Northwest, bringing thousands of athletes and families to the popular resort community of Sunriver, nestled in the mountains of Central Oregon. The Pacific Crest multisport events are under Special Use permit from the Deschutes National Forest.
